September 24, (THEWILL) — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday inaugurated the newly completed 15.13-kilometre Ika–Azumini Road in Akwa Ibom State, describing the project as a model of people-focused governance and grassroots development.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government at the commissioning ceremony, Wike commended the state government for prioritising infrastructure that connects rural communities to economic opportunities.
He said projects like the Ika–Azumini road were vital for promoting national integration and improving the quality of life in rural areas.
“This is the kind of leadership Nigeria needs — one that focuses on projects with direct impact on the people.
“When states deliver such infrastructure, the Federal Government must acknowledge and support them,” Wike said.
The minister applauded Governor Umo Eno for completing the road linking Akwa Ibom and Abia states, saying the decision to pursue projects across political divides reflected maturity and a commitment to the people’s welfare.
“Development does not recognise political parties. What we have seen here today is tangible progress, not mere promises.
“The governor has shown love for his people by completing this road, and I commend his collaboration with the Senate President in the interest of Akwa Ibom. Unity brings development,” he added.
Governor Eno described the project as proof of his administration’s commitment to continuity and regional cooperation.
He reiterated that his government was determined to complete projects regardless of which administration initiated them.
“Government is a continuum. What matters is finishing projects for the common good.
“This road again reaffirms our commitment to delivering results. Development is not about party, it’s about the people,” he said.
The governor also pledged the state’s continued support for President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, commending the Federal Government for stabilising the economy and providing funds to states without adding to their debt burden.
“In Akwa Ibom, we are united across party lines in support of the President and the Senate President. We are Akwa Ibom united,” Eno stated.
He further issued a three-month ultimatum to contractors handling the 16-kilometre Mbiabong–Atan–Ikon-Inya–Ekpeyong Utuk road project, warning that their contracts would be terminated if there was no significant progress.
The event drew dignitaries from across the political spectrum, including the pioneer Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom, Brig.-Gen.
Tunde Ogbeha (retd.), Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and party leaders.
Residents of Ika and surrounding communities hailed the project as a boost to trade and agriculture, noting that it would ease access to Aba, the commercial hub of the South-East.
