June 02, (THEWILL) — Work has fully resumed at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) following the suspension of the one-day industrial action embarked upon by workers’ unions over internal labour-related issues.
THEWILL reports that the strike, which began earlier on Monday, June 1, 2026, was called off late in the night after successful negotiations between the top management of the commission and the two in-house unions, including the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
Earlier, THEWILL also reported that the 12-hour industrial action, which affected only administrative operations of the commission, did not disrupt regulatory activities in oil and gas facilities, which remained fully operational throughout the period.
In a statement signed on Tuesday by Eniola Akinkuotu, Head of Corporate Communications and Media at NUPRC, the commission confirmed the resumption of normal activities and urged members of the public to disregard reports suggesting that crude oil production was impacted by the brief strike action.
It also dismissed reports linking the dispute to foreign training arrangements, describing such claims as misleading and not reflective of the issues discussed during negotiations.
According to the commission, the misunderstanding was resolved amicably following dialogue between management and union representatives, leading to the suspension of the strike and restoration of normal operations across all NUPRC offices.
The NUPRC further assured stakeholders that it remains committed to improving the working environment of its staff and prioritising capacity development in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The statement reaffirmed management’s willingness to continue engaging with labour unions to address concerns affecting staff welfare, training, and institutional efficiency.
“Work has resumed fully across all offices of the Commission following the suspension of the one-day strike after fruitful discussions with the unions”, the statement said.
It added that regulatory oversight functions, field operations, and other critical activities were never disrupted during the brief industrial action.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to maintaining industrial harmony while ensuring uninterrupted regulation of Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.
