May 01, (THEWILL) – Governor Umo Eno has restated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers in Akwa Ibom State, assuring continuous collaboration with organised labour to drive progress and development.
Speaking at the 2025 International Workers’ Day Celebration held at the Uyo Township Stadium, the Governor commended the resilience and contributions of Akwa Ibom workers to the growth of the State and Nigeria at large.
“We are gathered here again today to mark this yearly event that celebrates the advancement of workers and their contribution to national growth. Thank you for all you are doing and will continue to do to move our State and nation forward in line with the ARISE Agenda”, he said.
Represented at the event by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the governor announced a special donation of N1.5 million to each affiliate Union of the labour movement.
Reflecting on his administration’s journey since assuming office, he noted that his campaign promise to work closely with labour unions has not only been upheld but strengthened.
“In the course of our successful electioneering campaign in 2024, I assured Labour that, if elected, I would sustain collaboration to move the union and our State forward. So far, we have done more and will continue to do more with the resources available.”
Governor Eno expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their vote of confidence and for scoring his administration high in performance.
“Since we came on board nearly two years ago, we have prioritised the welfare of workers, and this has been recognised with awards”, he said.
Governor Eno highlighted several pro-worker initiatives so far undertaken by his administration, including a minimum wage of N80,000, N1 million released in 2024 to mark Civil Service Week, recruitment of 600 medical personnel into the civil service, appointment of over 20 permanent secretaries, each provided with SUVs to ease transportation to work place, presentation of housing units to workers, amongst others.
The Governor sued for greater synergy between the government and Labour.
The celebration featured goodwill messages from key government officials, the leadership of the NLC and TUC.
