  • World No. 19 and top seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova, was forced to retire from her opening-round match at the Memphis Classic after collapsing on court in sweltering conditions, handing 16-year-old Kristina Liutova the first WTA Tour-level victory of her career.

  • Alexandrova, one of the tournament’s biggest stars, had been locked in a gruelling three-hour battle with her fellow Russian when the intense 34°C heat appeared to take its toll. Trailing 5-4 in the deciding set, the 31-year-old suddenly collapsed, prompting immediate concern from spectators, officials and her teenage opponent.

  • Medical personnel rushed onto the court to treat the former WTA title winner, while Liutova looked visibly distressed as she watched the incident unfold. Despite receiving treatment, Alexandrova was unable to continue, forcing her to retire from the match and bringing an abrupt end to her campaign in Memphis.

July 29, (THEWILL) — The world No. 19 and tournament favourite was trailing fellow Russian Liutova 5-4 in the deciding set when she suddenly fell ill during the third hour of the contest. With temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius, Alexandrova collapsed on the court, prompting immediate medical attention.

Medical personnel rushed to assist the 31-year-old as a visibly emotional Liutova watched from the opposite side of the net. Despite receiving treatment, Alexandrova was unable to continue the match and was forced to retire.

The withdrawal ended a fiercely contested encounter and sent Liutova through to the next round, marking the biggest moment of the teenager’s young career.

Alexandrova had entered the tournament as the top seed and one of the favourites for the title, but the oppressive conditions ultimately proved too much as the match stretched deep into a deciding set.

While tournament organisers have yet to provide further details on Alexandrova’s condition, the incident has once again raised concerns about athletes competing in extreme heat, particularly during long matches.

For Liutova, however, the victory represents a memorable breakthrough. Although the result came under unfortunate circumstances, the 16-year-old can now celebrate the first WTA Tour-level win of her career as she continues her run in Memphis.
