August 19, (THEWILL) — At least 13 worshippers were killed on Tuesday when gunmen attacked a mosque in Unguwan Mantau village, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, said the assault was believed to be a reprisal following a recent ambush by villagers on a bandit group in the area.
The attackers reportedly stormed the mosque around 5 a.m. during dawn (Fajr) prayers, opening fire on worshippers.
“The victims were observing prayers when the criminals started shooting sporadically,” Mu’azu said.
He added that security personnel from the army, police, and air force had been deployed to the community to restore calm.
