December 16, (THEWILL) — The Abia State Government has announced that its Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise for December will take place on Saturday, December 20, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., with a temporary restriction on human and vehicular movement across the state.
A statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, explained that the shift in date was necessitated by the festive period, noting the importance of sustaining a clean and healthy environment throughout the celebrations.
According to the statement, only persons on essential duties will be permitted to move during the sanitation hours and must present valid identification or appropriate authorisation on demand.
The commissioner directed Executive Chairmen of Local Government Councils, traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious leaders, as well as youth and women organisations, to intensify sensitisation efforts and ensure full participation by residents in the exercise.
In addition, all markets, motor parks, private and public transport companies, and business premises are to remain closed on Friday, December 19, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to enable them to conduct their own clean-up activities.
Security and enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been directed to assemble at their usual take-off points for deployment during the exercise.
Residents have been advised to stay within their homes, clean their immediate surroundings, and observe safety measures, including the use of nose masks. The government warned that defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.
