December 18, (THEWILL) – Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged Nigerians to celebrate Christmas with moderation and extend acts of love and kindness to the less privileged and vulnerable in society.
The governor made the appeal during the Ogun State Christmas Carol and Service of Nine Lessons, held at the Arcade Ground, State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The event, which featured prominent figures including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President Most Reverend Nicolas Okoh, former Governor Segun Osoba, and Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church, emphasized the importance of unity, compassion, and giving during the festive season.
Abiodun described Christmas as a season that transcends barriers and fosters love, compassion, and faith, urging residents to reflect on the true essence of the holiday.
“It is a season that inspires us to look beyond ourselves and embrace the bonds of family and friendship. Let us extend our hands to the needy, for such acts reflect Christ’s life to the world. Without Christ, there is no Christmas,” Abiodun said.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the vulnerable and fostering an inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
“We will continue to focus on programs that spread love, compassion, and empowerment across Ogun State,” he added.
While acknowledging the government’s strides in public service and infrastructure development, Abiodun noted that the true measure of success lies in the strength of community bonds and the compassion shared among residents.
In his sermon titled “Building Our Future Together,” CAN President Nicolas Okoh highlighted the significance of reconciliation and peace during Christmas, urging believers to act as champions of unity.
“Christmas should not be celebrated only with friends, but with all men. It is a time to make peace, not foster bitterness, and to remember the poor and the needy,” Okoh said, referencing John 2:7.
Bishop David Oyedepo, in his prayer for the state and nation, reminded Nigerians of the essence of Christmas, emphasizing that peace, made possible by the birth of Jesus, is key to resolving societal challenges.
“Christmas is not only about merriment but about showing love and fostering peaceful coexistence. When there is peace, all problems come to an end,” Oyedepo stated.
The service featured Bible readings by dignitaries, including the governor’s wife, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, and the Chief Judge of the state. Musical renditions by various choirs and guest artists added a festive touch to the event.
