May 11, (THEWILL) — A tragic lone vehicle crash on the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway has claimed the lives of 11 persons, the Federal Road Safety Corps (Federal Road Safety Corps), Ogun State Command, confirmed on Monday, describing the incident as a devastating night-time accident involving suspected reckless driving and overloading.
The Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta through the Command’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Odunsi Afolabi, stating that the crash occurred on Sunday night and involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE 722 KJ.
According to the FRSC, the vehicle reportedly lost control while in motion, somersaulted on the bridge, and plunged off the structure. The impact left all occupants trapped inside, with reports indicating that the doors became jammed, preventing escape.
Personnel from the Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene for emergency rescue operations, where they worked alongside members of the local community to access the wreckage and recover the victims.
Ogunjobi confirmed that all 11 occupants of the vehicle—10 adult males and one adult female—were confirmed dead at the scene.
He explained that FRSC operatives had to dismantle parts of the severely damaged vehicle before the bodies could be recovered. The remains were thereafter evacuated and deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary investigations pointed to suspected driving under the influence and overloading as likely causes of the crash, which may have contributed to loss of controlo.
Ogunjobi cautioned motorists against reckless driving, overloading, and night journeys, stressing that such violations remain major contributors to avoidable road deaths.
He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to stricter enforcement, improved response operations, and sustained public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing road crashes.
