SAN FRANCISCO, February 10, (THEWILL) – It was shock and dismay as security operatives recovered about 147 cluster bombs from a village in Borno State.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Clement Adoda, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Maiduguri, the state capital, Tuesday, said the bombs were recovered from Auno village in Konduga Local Government Area .
The village, according to the Police, is situated at about 27 kilometers from the state capital .
Speaking at the briefing, Adoda said: “ I am glad that at about 9am on 8th February 2015 (Sunday) 147 unexploded cluster ordinances (UXOS) were recovered at about 2 kilometers away from Auno village near Jakana, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.”
According to the Police Commissioner, the combined team of bomb disposal unit, policemen and troops attached to Jakana general area led by Capt. Daniel Yakubu sighted the explosives, recovered and destroyed them without any harm to anybody.
He disclosed that the state bomb disposal team also recovered unexploded ordinance (UXO) in one of the Boys’ Quarters at the residence of the state Director of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) along Damboa road in Maiduguri. The ordinance, according to him, is suspected to have been deployed during one of the insurgents’ attacks on the state capital.
He pleaded with members of the public to always call on security agencies, whenever items suspected to be Improved Explosive Devices (IEDs) are discovered in their domains, saying “this is the only way to avert further wanton destruction to lives and property in the state.”
Praising the people of the state for the maturity they exhibited over the postponement of the polls, Adoda said: “the way people of Borno have behaved since hearing the postponement of the February elections is commendable.
“This indicates that the Nigerian democracy is getting matured by the day, I therefore urge the people of the state and politician in particular to extend same during the elections.”
