May 15, (THEWILL) — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties in Akwa Ibom State to conduct all political activities within the provisions of the Electoral Act and established guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Anugbum Onuoha, gave the warning during a meeting with chairmen and secretaries of 22 political parties at the INEC office in Uyo.
Onuoha said compliance with electoral laws and regulations remained critical to the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections
He urged political parties to avoid actions capable of undermining public confidence in the democratic process.
He stressed that political parties remain central to democratic participation through voter mobilization, candidate nomination, and political education.
“Your role in monitoring, mobilizing citizens, fielding candidates, and educating your members directly impacts the credibility and usefulness of our elections,” he said.
The REC reiterated INEC’s commitment to neutrality, insisting that the commission has no preferred candidates in the elections.
“Let me clearly state that INEC in Akwa Ibom is committed to transparency as seen in the application of the Electoral Act 2026 as well as our regulations and guidelines.
“We do not have a candidate in this election. Our only interest is to ensure that every vote counts.
“We provide a level playing field to all registered political parties. Any complaint or observation you have should be directed through the appropriate channels or brought to my office,” he stated.
Onuoha also urged political parties to conduct transparent primaries, submit nomination lists within stipulated timelines, and ensure proper screening and accreditation of party agents.
He further warned against violence and the spread of misinformation as political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027.
“Let us work together to reduce tension and build public trust and confidence,” he added.
Responding on behalf of political parties, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in the state, Blessing Udoh, assured INEC of the cooperation of political parties toward peaceful and credible elections in the state.
