April 02, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified its pre-election security awareness campaign, warning residents against electoral violence and unsafe road practices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Baba Azare, led the sensitization campaign to Itam Market, one of the state’s busiest commercial centers, as part of the activities marking the 2026 National Police Day.
Addressing traders, transport workers, and residents, Azare stressed that peaceful elections remain critical to sustaining democracy. He urged citizens to resist being used as tools for violence by politicians.
“Elections are not wars; they are a civic exercise to choose leaders. Do not allow yourselves to be used by desperate politicians. Your vote is your power, protect it without shedding blood,” the CP stated.
The police boss also raised concerns over rising cases of road accidents, which he attributed to reckless driving, overloading, and disregard for traffic regulations.
He called on motorists to strictly adhere to road safety rules, especially as movement is expected to increase in the lead-up to the elections and during the rainy season.
The campaign featured an awareness walk within the market and the distribution of educational materials.
Similar sensitization exercises were carried out simultaneously across various divisions in the state to strengthen police-community relations.
