December 02, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, on Monday, joined police formations across the country to celebrate a historic milestone: 70 years of women’s service in the Nigeria Police Force, with a commemorative road walk and an emotional outreach to retired policewomen, who, according to them, paved the way for today’s generation.
The event, which lit up major streets in Uyo, saw a vibrant procession of female officers demonstrating unity, strength, and the unmistakable spirit of resilience that has defined policewomen since their formal integration into the Force in 1955.
The symbolic march also promoted physical fitness, team bonding, and engagement with members of the public who watched and cheered along the route.
As part of activities marking the anniversary, the Command’s female officers paid a series of home visits to distinguished retired policewomen, including ACP Ini Akpabio (Rtd.), ACP Elizabeth Mfon (Rtd.), and SP Rachel Esin (Rtd.), in a gesture aimed at celebrating their years of dedicated service.
The visits featured gift presentations and moments of reflection on the pioneering sacrifices that helped shape today’s gender-inclusion advancements in policing.
Deeply moved by the recognition, the retired officers expressed gratitude and described the outreach as a rare honour that signified respect for the legacy they helped to build. They encouraged serving policewomen to uphold discipline, commitment, and professional excellence.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, lauded the exceptional role women have played in the evolution of policing in Nigeria.
He highlighted their contributions to intelligence gathering, investigations, community relations, administration, and frontline operations, noting that the 70-year journey has been one of courage, sacrifice, and outstanding achievements.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to promoting gender balance, expanding opportunities for female officers, and ensuring their welfare.
Azare further noted that the Nigeria Police Force has become a more inclusive institution, where women now serve as Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and heads of strategic units.
The Command congratulated all serving and retired policewomen on the milestone and commended them for their continued impact on safety, security, and national development.
