December 02, (THEWILL) — Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial primary of the party in the State.

The resignation, contained in a letter dated November 4, 2025, was addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman for Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde of Ede North Local Government Area.

In the letter titled “Resignation of my membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)”, Governor Adeleke cited “the current crisis of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)” as the reason for his decision, and declared his resignation “with immediate effect”.

He expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it provided him, for his election as Senator representing Osun West and later as Governor of Osun State under the PDP banner.

Governor Adeleke’s exit comes at a critical moment, less than 24 hours before the 2026 governorship primary of the PDP in Osun State were scheduled to be held.

Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday, Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, said the internal turmoil within the party had made it impossible to conduct the governorship primary earlier scheduled for December 2, 2025.

Bisi stated that Governor Adeleke had fully complied with all requirements set out in the PDP’s nomination timetable. He noted that the governor “purchased and submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms within the stipulated window of October 13th to 25th, 2025”, meeting the official deadline for submission. The chairman further explained that Adeleke appeared before the party’s screening committee on October 30, was screened, and cleared without reservations, receiving a Certificate of Clearance in accordance with PDP procedures.

However, Bisi said the situation changed when the escalating leadership crisis at the national level, involving the suspension and counter-suspension of key officials responsible for conducting congresses and primaries, created significant uncertainty, obstructing preparations for the governorship primary.

Bisi also indicated that the crisis had affected Adeleke’s willingness to seek reelection under the PDP.

“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect.

“I thank the People’s Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State under the People’s Democratic Party”, the Governor confirmed in his resignation letter.
