Accommodation Woes Cast Shadow On Asaba Youth Games

September 26, (THEWILL) – The 7th National Youth Games currently underway in Asaba, have provided a mixed bag of positives and negatives for the future of Nigerian sports. The games, designed to unearth the next generation of talent, have suffered accommodation issues due to planning challenges.

Pictures circulating on social media depicted young athletes crowded together and sleeping on mattresses on floors. Whilst concerning at first glance, officials have provided context around the images. Demola Aare, Project Manager for Hostels and Accommodation, explained that several factors contributed. Originally, athletes were to be housed in local schools and universities. However, the postponed start date meant these facilities became unavailable as academic schedules resumed.

Contingents also exceeded registered numbers, placing strain on resources. Aare acknowledged the situation was far from ideal. However, he stated that his team was working hard to resolve the issues despite the difficult circumstances.

The problems should not overshadow the aims of the games. Identifying future talent and replacing aging stars has long been a issue affecting Nigerian sports. The national youth event provides a platform to address this.

Whilst accommodation has proved problematic, the competitions themselves have gone smoothly. The early troubles will hopefully be merely teething issues for a worthwhile sporting showcase. With improved planning and organization, future editions of the Asaba Youth Games can hopefully capture the original vision. For now, it appears a mixed bag of success and struggles.
