March 12, (THEWILL) — The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has disowned the purported suspension of the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, by the party’s Wuse Ward chapter, declaring the action null and void.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ward lacked the constitutional authority to suspend a sitting senator, dismissing the reported action as invalid. He stressed that the ward level does not have such powers under the party’s constitution.
“The ward does not have such powers to suspend a senator from the party. They don’t know what they are doing”, Abdullahi said.
Senator Kingibe also rejected the reported suspension, describing it as illegal and lacking constitutional backing. She said those behind the action acted out of ignorance of the party’s rules and procedures.
The reaction from the national leadership followed an earlier announcement by the Wuse Ward chapter of the ADC claiming it had indefinitely suspended the lawmaker over alleged anti-party activities and breaches of party rules.
The ward chairman, Kanayo Chukwu, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, explaining that the decision followed a general ward meeting held on March 10, 2026, where several allegations against the senator were reviewed.
According to him, the meeting, attended by more than 2,000 participants, considered accusations, including the confiscation of the ward register, running a parallel membership registration, frequent absence from ward meetings, failure to pay statutory party dues and alleged insubordination toward party leadership.
“After due consideration of these serious breaches, a motion for the immediate suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe was moved and ratified by a two-thirds majority of the executives present”, Chukwu said, adding that the resolution had been forwarded to the chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council chapter, Omale Sule, for ratification in line with party procedures.
Sule confirmed receipt of the report, noting that the matter would follow the party’s constitutional process before any final decision is taken.
“As the local government chairman, I must await the official submission. Once received, it will be forwarded to the state chairman for further action”, he said.
The FCT chairman of the party, Clement Ehijiator, also confirmed receiving the report and assured that it would be examined in accordance with the party constitution before any further action is taken.
“As the constitutional chairman of the party in the FCT, I have received the report. We will review the allegations and take appropriate steps before forwarding it to the national leadership”, Ehijiator said.
