December 24, (THEWILL) — Burkina Faso completed a remarkable comeback against Equatorial Guinea at the Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, scoring twice deep into stoppage time to take a 2-1 victory at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Wednesday.
The Stallions overturned an 85th-minute deficit with goals in the fifth and eighth minutes of added time. The Group E contest remained goalless through a tightly contested first half before Equatorial Guinea’s Basilo Ndung received a straight red card in the 50th minute for a dangerous challenge.
Burkina Faso appeared to have capitalised on their numerical advantage when Lassina Traoré scored in the 71st minute, but VAR intervened to disallow the goal. Equatorial Guinea took a shock lead against the run of play in the 85th minute when substitute Marvin Aniebo headed home Carlos Akapo’s corner just three minutes after entering the match.
The 10 men seemed set to claim all three points until Burkina Faso’s late surge. Substitute György Menongo levelled the score in the fifth minute of stoppage time before Edmond Tapsoba powered home the winner three minutes later.
The result places Burkina Faso top of Group E with three points, whilst Equatorial Guinea sit bottom ahead of the later meeting between Algeria and Sudan.
