October 14, (THEWILL) – Nigeria has summoned the Libyan chargé d’affaires in Nigeria following the maltreatment of the Super Eagles in Libya after their flight was unexpectedly diverted.
THEWILL reports that the Nigerian national football team announced Monday their intention to boycott the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) second-leg qualifier against Libya, in response to alleged mistreatment by Libyan authorities upon the team’s arrival in the country.
“They’ve locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food or drink”, Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, said in a statement on his personal X handle on Monday.
Speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, said the Nigerian authorities have been in direct communication with the Super Eagles, and officials from the Nigerian mission in Libya have been dispatched to provide support to the stranded players and officials.
Noting that the situation was being treated with urgency, Tuggar said efforts were underway to refuel the plane and expedite the national football team’s return to Nigeria,
