BEVERLY HILLS, February 06, (THEWILL) – Kassim Afegbua, Spokesman to former military President Ibrahim Babangida, has sued for fundamental rights enforcement and would present himself to the police on Wednesday.
According to his lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, in a statement on Tuesday, his client was not invited by the police before he was declared wanted by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Monday.
He stated that Afegbua has been “advised of his rights and remedies available to him, as a law-abiding citizen of Nigeria, he has elected to make himself available to the police on Wednesday once he returns from his trip.”
The IG had ordered Afegbua’s arrest for “making false statements, defamation of character, and for an act capable of inciting public disturbance.”
Ajulo later filed the suit at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Tuesday afternoon requesting N1 billion in damages from the police, its Spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, and two media houses,
He joined the National Television Authority (NTA) and Channels Television in the lawsuit for airing claims that Afegbua was a wanted man as he sought an immediate end to the alleged harassment being meted against him by the police.
THEWILL recalls that Afegbua released a statement on Sunday in which Babangida complained about President Muhammadu Buhari’s shortcomings and advised Nigerians on the path to the future.
Hours after the statement was released, a counter press release emerged that purportedly had Babangida’s approval denouncing the first statement.
Curiously, Babangida later said he authorised the statement distributed by Afegbua which threw the public into confusion leading to reports that the police had declared that Afegbua was wanted.
