SAN FRANCISCO, March 10, (THEWILL) – The Managing Director of Lekki Gardens, Mr. Richard Nyong, has been detained by the police following Tuesday’s collapse of a 5-storey building that was still under construction in the Lekki area, with death toll topping 32 as at Thursday.
The CEO of the construction company, which has several completed and uncompleted residential communities spread across Lagos, is being detained at the Panti Police Station, according to the Mr. Dolapo Badmus, the Lagos State police command spokesman, who said he would be charged to court as soon as investigation into the incident is completed.
THEWILL gathered that Nyong arrived the police station in the company of his lawyer, Mr. Wole Olanipekun.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode had Wednesday ordered all directors of the company to surrender to the Lagos State police commissioner within 24 hours when it was discovered that the company illegally added two additional floors to the building in defiance to approved plan by regulators, which led to the sealing of the site.
“However, in a brazen act of defiance and impunity, the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens, criminally unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors,” the state government said after the collapse.
