…Says Islam does not condone extermination of innocent lives
SAN FRANCISCO, April 01, (THEWILL) – The Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, on Tuesday, again slammed the Boko Haram insurgents, saying they are misinterpreting the Holy Quran.
Maintaining that Islam does not condone the killing of innocent people and indiscriminate destruction of property as currently being done by the insurgents, Shettima described the activities of the sect as a misinterpretation of the Holy Qur’an and misconception of Islam.
The governor spoke while receiving the officials of the State Board for Qur’anic Education, who brought winners of the 2014 National Qur’anic Competition held in Dutse, Jigawa state before him.
Shettima said the insurgents were waging an unjust war against innocent Nigerians, saying Islam is a religion of peace which does not condone killing and destruction under whatever form.
“Distorted translation of the holy book by the insurgents landed us in this mess, if we have had good understanding of Islam we would have been in a better state than now.
“There is no room for extremism in Islam. We need to go back to Islam as practiced by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), when Islam encouraged Muslims, Jews and Christians to leave in peace with one another.
“We are presently in a day where some lunatics claiming to be crusaders of Islam are killing innocent people, burning mosques and Churches. It is bad interpretation of the holy book by the insurgents that caused all this”, he said.
The governor however congratulated the winning team on their success in the Quranic competition, encouraging them to maintain the tempo.
Shettima also donated the sum of N10 million to both the participants and the officials in appreciation of their efforts.
