SAN FRANCISCO, November 07, (THEWILL) – Gombe State Government said on Friday that the efforts being put to empower agriculture-based cooperatives in the state are already yielding the desired results.
Special Adviser to the state governor on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Alhaji Mohammed Audi, declared this at a workshop organised for cooperative societies in the state by the MDGs office.
Participants at the workshop were from 18 cooperative societies spread across six Local Government Areas of the state.
According to Audi, the empowerment being given to agriculture-based cooperative societies has impacted positively on the living condition of rural dwellers and the society in general thus making life better for citizens of the country.
“Agriculture, being the mainstay of the Nigerian economy must be sustained at all levels, to ensure adequate food production for the citizens of the country and even for export, “ he however advised.
The governor’s Special Adviser said the state MDGs office is presently constructing three farm training centres, one in each of the three senatorial districts of the state.
Explaining the rationale behind the workshop while speaking earlier at the occasion, the MDGs Technical Assistant for Gombe State, Mohammed Yelwa, said: “The main thrust of the workshop is the pre-requisites that will help us identify the cooperative societies that will be given grants to boost their activities geared towards food production and wealth creation.”
He also praised the efforts of both the State and Federal Governments in fighting poverty among Nigerians.
“We are grateful to President Goodluck Jonathan, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals, as well the Gombe State Government for really supporting the rural dwellers through various programmes of the MDGs,” he said.
