October 10, (THEWILL) — In a renewed effort to improve access to potable water, the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation (FMWRS) have commenced a comprehensive facility assessment of the Akwa Ibom Water Company Limited (AKWC).
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. (Dr) Ubuo Ubuo, who received the delegation from the Federal Ministry and the GIBB Consortium in Uyo, described the exercise as timely and aligned with Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to restoring and expanding the state’s water infrastructure.
Dr Ubuo lauded the Federal Government for selecting Akwa Ibom among six pilot states for the national water sector assessment, noting that the move would help identify gaps caused by aging facilities and capacity challenges.
The commissioner, however, commended the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno for prioritising water and sanitation services and assured full cooperation to ensure the success of the project.
He announced the appointment of a desk officer to liaise with the consortium for a smooth operation.
The Managing Director of the Akwa Ibom Water Company Limited, Engr. Edo Etuk, said the assessment followed resolutions of the last National Water Council to strengthen urban and semi-urban water systems nationwide.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry, Engr. Nafiu Kassim of the Federal Project Implementation Unit explained that the assessment, supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), will provide data for a Water Supply and Sanitation Investment Plan for participating states.
He said the six-month assignment will produce recommendations for short, medium, and long-term interventions at no cost to the states.
The leader of the GIBB Consortium, Mr Wiero Vogelzang, outlined the key components of the exercise, which include technical, sanitation, and financial/institutional assessments leading to the production of major reports for future investment planning.
