October 01, (THEWILL) — Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has expressed profound grief over the killing of 29-year-old ARISE TV Anchor and Correspondent, Somtochukwu Christelle (Sommie) Maduagwu, in Abuja.
The young journalist was reportedly attacked by armed robbers while returning home from work late Monday night.
Eyewitnesses said she sustained fatal injuries during the assault and was later confirmed dead, a development that has triggered outrage and mourning across the media industry.
Describing the death of the award-winning broadcaster as “tragic and untimely,” Governor Eno said Maduagwu’s brilliance and professionalism had already left a strong imprint on Nigeria’s journalism space.
“Sommie was a dedicated and passionate journalist whose eloquence and professionalism inspired many across Nigeria. At such a young age, she had excelled in beauty pageantry, law, and the media—a testament to her brilliance, poise, and drive,” the governor said.
He extended condolences to Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of ARISE Media Group, as well as the Maduagwu family, describing the loss as a painful blow to journalism in the country.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, I commiserate with Prince Nduka Obaigbena, the Management and Staff of ARISE Media Group, and the Maduagwu family. May God grant them comfort in this painful time, and may Sommie’s gentle soul rest in eternal peace,” Eno added.
