September 04, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued 20 Ghanaians trafficked into Uyo, the state capital.
Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia.
He said the victims, 10 males and 10 females, were rescued from a compound in Obio Etoi village, Uyo Local Government Area, following a joint operation that involved the Ghana Police Service and INTERPOL.
“On August 18, 2025, operatives of the Command rescued 20 Ghanaians trafficked to Uyo.
The victims appeared disoriented and unable to provide useful information, raising suspicion that they may have been hypnotised,” Azare said.
The police boss also confirmed the arrest of a suspected notorious human trafficker, 47-year-old Alex Omosivie, from Edo State.
He was picked up on August 26 at a hotel on Ring Road 3, Uyo, during a sting operation. Two more victims were rescued during his arrest.
According to Azare, preliminary investigations revealed that Omosivie, a deportee from an African country, had recently trafficked two young women—18-year-old Odo Asuquo Asuquo to Libya in July 2025, and 16-year-old Glory Asuquo Asuquo to Burkina Faso in August 2025.
The suspect, who allegedly admitted to receiving ₦50,000 for each victim, is currently in custody, while the parents of the trafficked girls have been contacted to aid investigations.
