Alcaraz To End Year At Number One Ranking After ATP Finals Victory

Alcaraz ATP Finals Victory

November 14, (THEWILL) — Carlos Alcaraz confirmed he will finish 2025 atop the men’s world rankings after defeating Lorenzo Musetti 6-4 6-1 at the ATP Finals on Thursday. The Spaniard’s victory in Turin guaranteed first place in the Jimmy Connors Group and means he cannot be overtaken by Jannik Sinner, even if the Italian retains his Finals title.

The 22-year-old has claimed two Grand Slam titles this season and compiled a record of 70 match wins. Alcaraz won four of five encounters with Sinner in 2025, including finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He defeated the Italian in June to retain the French Open crown before losing to him in the All England Club final.

Musetti, who entered the tournament only after Novak Djokovic withdrew, has been eliminated from the competition. The world number nine must now decide whether to participate in the Davis Cup Final 8, scheduled for Bologna next week. Thursday’s match in front of a vocal Italian crowd lasted just under 90 minutes.

Alex de Minaur joined Alcaraz in the semi-finals after beating Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 earlier in the day. The Australian needed a straight-sets victory to progress and delivered his 43rd hard-court win of the season, the most of any player on the men’s tour in 2025.

De Minaur will face Sinner in Saturday’s semi-finals, whilst Alcaraz continues his pursuit of a maiden Finals title. Fritz’s defeat after one hour and 35 minutes brought the American’s campaign at the season-ending tournament to a close. Sinner qualified from the Bjorn Borg Group in first place on Wednesday.
