Algeria Maintain Perfect Qualifying Record With 2-1 Win Over Uganda

June 18, (THEWILL) – Algeria continued their flawless run in Group F of the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a comfortable 2-1 triumph over Uganda at Douala’s Japoma Stadium.

Djamel Belmadi’s team dominated the match, securing their fifth consecutive victory in the qualifying campaign. Mohamed Amoura’s brace sealed the win for the Fennec Foxes, while Fahad Bayo managed to pull one back for the Cranes in the game’s dying moments. Uganda’s chances of progressing to the continental showpiece now depend on winning their final group match against Niger and hoping that Algeria’s next opponents, Tanzania, do not cause an upset.

Earlier in the day, Algeria’s position at the top of the group was briefly threatened when the Taifa Stars defeated Niger 1-0, creating a three-point cushion for themselves in second place. However, Milutin Sredojevic’s side, determined to secure a positive result on home soil, successfully held off Uganda’s advances. Algeria remains the sole team with a perfect record in the qualifiers, having won all four of their previous fixtures, guaranteeing their place in next year’s tournament in Ivory Coast.

Throughout the match in Cameroon, the visitors maintained control, and although chances were scarce early on, Amoura came close with a headed effort in the 13th minute. The game gradually opened up, with opportunities for both sides, but it was Amoura who broke the deadlock for Algeria in the 42nd minute, finding the net after goalkeeper Salim Jamal had initially denied Haris Belkebla’s long-range strike.

The Fennec Foxes continued their dominance in the second half, with Amoura again on target, capitalising on a quick counter-attack orchestrated by Riyad Mahrez. Bayo’s late consolation goal for Uganda brought cheer to their supporters, but it was too little.
