Algeria Wants Afcon 2017

Must Read

Officials in Algeria have indicated that the country could host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations if ongoing instability in Libya forces it to pull out of the arrangements.

Libya was stripped of hosting rights for the 2013 edition which was held instead in South Africa, and there are growing concerns mostly in the region that normalcy may likely not return early enough to allow preparations for the tournament.

“We are ready to take over if Libya finds itself in a situation not to be able to host the tournament,” Algeria sports minister Mohamed Tahmi said on Monday.

“We have the infrastructure and means to host the tournament in the best way possible.”

Caf is yet to comment on the situation in Libya while local authorities believe the dust will settle soon to allow preparations for the showpiece.
