October 21, (THEWILL) – Manchester City got back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-1 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, which took them above Liverpool at the top of the English Premier League table.
Julian Alvarez put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute, slotting home after good work from Jeremy Doku down the right flank. The lead was doubled soon after when Erling Haaland powered home a loose ball from the edge of the area to end his brief goal drought.
City dominated possession for the remainder of the first period but could not extend their advantage. The Seagulls had a gilt-edged chance to pull one back early in the second half but Pascal Gross slashed wide after finding space in the box.
The away side did eventually get on the scoresheet through substitute Ansu Fati, notching their 18th consecutive away match with a goal, but City held on despite Manuel Akanji’s late dismissal to claim all three points.
With the win, the reigning champions bounced back after recent struggles and will look to build momentum ahead of a crucial run of fixtures over the packed winter period.
