SAN FRANCISCO, October 29, (THEWILL) – The Senate Thursdays confirmed former Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and other ministerial nominees forwarded to it for approval as ministers of the federal republic of Nigeria.
THEWILL notes that Amaechi’s confirmation was contentious as senators elected on the platform of the PDP who strongly opposed his confirmation, staged a walkout before his confirmation was done. Senator Ike Ekweremadu (PDP) did not walkout with his colleagues because he is also the Deputy President of the Senate.
The tension at the senate over Amaechi’s confirmation escalated during the debate on a petition tendered against his confirmation by a group in Rivers State, which accused the former governor of graft during his tenure as Governor of Rivers State (2007-2015).
The report was presented by the Chairman of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Before the debate started, the senate had confirmed the nomination of 17 nominees previously screened.
With Thursday’s exercise, the senate has completed the screening and confirmation of all 36 nominees.
The other 17 nominees confirmed today are Adebayo Shittu, Khadija Ibrahim, Heineken Lokpobiri, Cladius Daramola, Baba Mustapha, Ocholi James, Adewole Folorunso, Bawa Bwari, Geoffrey Onyeama, Zainab Ahmed, Mohammed Dan Ali, Usani Uguru, Okechukwu Enelamah, Anwuka Gozie, Mohammed Bello, Adamu Adamu and Aisha Abubakar.
