November 21, (THEWILL) – Amnesty International Nigeria recently organized a one-day capacity-building training for journalism practitioners at the Hawthorn Hotel in Garki, Abuja, on November 7, 2024.
In his opening remarks, Isa Sanusi, the Chief Executive Officer of Amnesty International Nigeria, thanked participants for honoring the invitation and stressed the critical role of the media in raising awareness about human rights.
He highlighted the importance of ensuring that no one’s rights are violated, regardless of gender or social status.
“We aim for a society where everyone can sleep peacefully in their homes without fear,” Sanusi said.
Dr. Authur Ajinam, one of the key speakers, underscored the role of journalists not as advocates but as objective reporters.
He noted that journalists should maintain their independence while promoting human rights through their work.
“Journalists are not advocates, but they must be advocates for human rights. We need to change the narrative and encourage people in positions of authority to treat others with decency,” Ajinam said.
He also stressed that the rights of citizens in democratic societies must be protected and upheld.
“The essence of a liberal, open, and democratic society is that the rights of the people cannot be denied,” he added.
Several other guest speakers provided insightful discussions on various aspects of human rights and the importance of respecting these rights in society.
The training attracted media practitioners from across Nigeria, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate.
In an interview with Our Correspondent, a reporter with Statesman Newspaper, shared his excitement about attending the workshop.
“I’ve always wanted to be part of such a workshop.
“I’m thrilled that Amnesty International found me worthy to attend. This workshop has broadened my understanding of fundamental rights and how we, as journalists, must ensure that these rights are not violated. It has also rekindled my subconscious mind about human rights reporting,” he stated.
