February 20, (THEWILL) – The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has withdrawn from the local government election scheduled for Saturday, February 22, citing a recent Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated its previously elected chairmen and councillors.
In a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, the party said the court’s decision rendered the election unnecessary.
Dated February 17 and signed by the APC State Secretary, Olabisi Kamoru, the letter read in part, “Recall that the judgment of the Federal High Court in suit No. FHF/OS/CS/94/2022 was nullified on February 10 by the Court of Appeal in Akure, in appeal No. CA/AK/270/2022 between APC and three others versus the Peoples Democratic Party and others.
“By this judgment, the previously elected officers have resumed office as permitted by the Court of Appeal.”
The party further noted that since the court had upheld the legitimacy of the reinstated officials, the local government seats were no longer vacant.
“In view of the foregoing, we hereby state that the APC and all its candidates have, by this letter, withdrawn from the local government election scheduled for February 22,” the statement added.
The party described the planned election as “unnecessary, superfluous, and unlawful” following the recent court ruling.
