July 26, (THEWILL) — Arsenal confirmed the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP on Saturday for a fee of £54.8 million, with potential add-ons taking the deal to £63.4 million.
The 26-year-old, who scored 39 goals in Liga Portugal last season, will wear the No. 14 shirt and join Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Asia immediately. His arrival addresses the Gunners’ long-standing need for a prolific centre-forward.
Gyökeres’ move follows months of negotiations after his standout performances for Sporting, including a UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta described him as an “exceptional talent” with the “physicality, intelligence, and work ethic” to thrive under Mikel Arteta. The striker’s 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese champions made him one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards this summer.
Arteta emphasised Gyökeres’ “clinical edge” and “intelligent movement,” qualities that align with Arsenal’s attacking philosophy.
The Swede’s availability has also been a key factor, he missed just two league games last season due to injury. His signing follows the acquisition of defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia, as Arsenal reinforce their squad ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign.
Gyökeres could make his unofficial debut in Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Tottenham on Thursday next week in Bangkok.
The club’s Asia tour includes further fixtures in Japan and South Korea, offering him early opportunities to integrate.
His competitive debut is likely to come in August, with Arsenal opening their English Premier League season away to Manchester United on August 17.
The transfer is Arsenal’s most significant striker signing since Gabriel Jesus joined in 2022.
With Gyökeres’ proven goal-scoring record, the Gunners aim to close the gap on rivals Liverpool, who pipped them to the title last season.
