January 25, (THEWILL) — Michael Carrick’s Manchester United maintained their perfect record in his second spell as manager with a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The result prevented the Gunners from restoring their seven-point lead at the top of the English Premier League, leaving them four points clear instead.
Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute through an own goal, with Lisandro Martinez slicing Martin Odegaard’s shot into his own net. Martin Zubimendi’s poor pass eight minutes later gifted Bryan Mbeumo an opportunity to intercept and round David Raya, scoring his 50th Premier League goal to level the contest.
Patrick Dorgu put United ahead five minutes into the second half, linking up with Fernandes before striking a swerving effort off the underside of the crossbar. Substitute Mikel Merino brought Arsenal level after prodding home from a corner, though Matheus Cunha failed to clear the ball off the line.
Cunha redeemed himself in the 87th minute, curling a superb finish from distance into the bottom-right corner to secure all three points. United’s victory lifts them to fourth in the table, whilst Arsenal saw their advantage at the summit reduced following earlier wins for Manchester City and Aston Villa.
