December 12, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have condemned racial abuse targeting forward, Lauren James, online after Sunday’s Women’s Super League match against Arsenal. The abuse came after the England international was shown a yellow card for an apparent stamp on Arsenal’s Lia Walti in the 70th minute of the match.
Chelsea manager, Emma Hayes, substituted James soon after the incident. Arsenal went on to win the match 4-1 against the reigning WSL champions. Chelsea stated that the club “stands strongly against any form of abuse and discriminatory behaviour” and that “discrimination has no place at Chelsea Football Club.”
The England Football Association also voiced support for James, stating on social media that “we stand alongside you LJ. Online abuse and discriminatory behaviour has no place in football.” The FA further added that “this abhorrent behaviour must have consequences.”
Incidents of online racist abuse targeting football players have become distressingly common over recent years. Both clubs and authorities are attempting to take a strong stance against discrimination. However, more action is still needed to protect players and punish the perpetrators.
Chelsea’s statement made clear that the club will seek to identify and take action against any individuals responsible for the abuse against James.
