February 01, (THEWILL) – Arsenal have agreed to terminate the contract of backup goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson with immediate effect.
The Iceland international stopper originally signed from French side Dijon in September 2020 but struggled during limited opportunities, making just 6 appearances in his debut season. He soon fell down the pecking order and has since spent time on loan with multiple clubs.
Most recently, Runarsson was on loan with Championship team Cardiff City but Arsenal have now cut that deal short whilst also ripping up his contract entirely. The 27-year-old is set to join Danish powerhouses FC Copenhagen imminently as he searches for regular game time.
Runarsson has not played competitively for the Gunners since 2021. His imminent departure makes him the first Arsenal player to leave the club this January transfer window.
The North London outfit could yet see fringe stars like Cedric Soares and Marquinhos also exit before the deadline on Thursday night as manager Mikel Arteta streamlines his squad for the season run-in.
