July 28, (THEWILL) – As the industrial action embarked by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) reaches six months, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Imo State chapter, has urged FG to call off the strike.
Members of the union, ASUU and other union representatives, who barricaded Government House entrance gate, displaying placards with various inscriptions, were later addressed by the Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, who was moving out with his entourage.
The Governor told them President Muhammadu Buhari is making efforts towards ensuring that the strike is called off soon.
Speaking to newsmen during the peaceful protest, the Acting Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Imo State Council, Reverend Philip Nwansi, said their purpose was to make sure that ASUZU settles with the Federal Government.
“We want lecturers to go back to classes. Our students are tired of staying at home. The female ones now indulge in prostitution, while the boys are joining cult groups.
Comrade Chinedu Ihejirika, of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), said that they had been on strike because Government has abandoned education system in the country.
Ihejirika noted that FG should make sure the system is revamped completely, so as to take the sector to greater heights.
Odinakachi Ejiogu of IMSU, and Dr Mrs Julian Ibeabuchi of FUTO, pleaded with the Federal Government to listen to their plights.
“We are on a worthy cause. Our universities being under lock and key for a long time is not a good one for our education sector. FG should settle this issue with the the ASUU.”
