March 28, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, called for stronger unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging party members to remain steadfast in advancing his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Speaking at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu described the gathering as a defining moment for both the APC and Nigeria’s democratic journey, stressing that cohesion within the party is critical to sustaining governance reforms and national development.
Reflecting on the APC’s formation in 2013, the President recalled how its founding members set aside political differences to build a united platform focused on rescuing Nigeria from economic decline and institutional decay. He urged current leaders to preserve that legacy by placing collective interest above personal ambition.
Tinubu paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari and other late party stalwarts, calling on members to honour their sacrifices by strengthening the party’s internal democracy and avoiding divisive tendencies.
Reiterating the party’s broader vision, the President said the APC was established not merely as a vehicle for political ambition, but as a platform for national transformation to deepen governance, strengthen institutions, and expand economic opportunities.
He dismissed claims that the ruling party intends to dominate Nigeria’s political space, noting that a vibrant democracy thrives on credible opposition capable of holding government accountable and enriching policy debate.
Defending the Electoral Act 2026, President Tinubu described criticisms from opposition parties as misplaced, insisting that the legislation followed due legislative process and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to credible and transparent elections.
On the economy, the President highlighted key achievements of his administration, including ongoing infrastructure development, fiscal reforms, and renewed investor confidence. He noted improvements in foreign exchange reserves, trade balance, and activity in the oil and gas sector, alongside easing inflationary pressures despite global economic headwinds.
Acknowledging persistent challenges in the power sector, Tinubu outlined plans to address electricity constraints through targeted reforms, including the proposed establishment of a Grid Asset Management Company to improve efficiency and reliability.
The President also underscored the importance of inclusivity, pledging greater participation for young people and women in governance and party structures. He encouraged youth engagement in leadership and nation-building efforts.
Tinubu further urged party members to conduct themselves with discipline and mutual respect during the convention, warning against actions capable of undermining unity within the APC.
He commended the convention’s organising committee and APC governors for ensuring a smooth process, and charged newly elected party officials to lead with integrity, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility.
The President called on party leaders to sustain the APC’s expansion and consolidate its growing support base, noting that recent defections from other political parties reflect increasing public confidence in the ruling party’s direction.
