President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

December 15, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu on Monday said the legacy of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari must be sustained through disciplined leadership and tangible results, rather than rhetoric alone.

Speaking at the launch of Buhari’s biography in Abuja, the President noted that while legacies are often shaped by past achievements, they only endure when succeeding leaders consciously choose to uphold and build upon them.

He described this responsibility as both a personal commitment and a collective national duty.

“These are the pillars of his legacy. But a legacy becomes alive only when those who come after choose to continue what has been started,” Tinubu said.

The President praised Buhari’s unwavering devotion to Nigeria, noting that the former leader demonstrated love for the country through daily commitment to duty and fidelity to his oath of office.

He added that even Buhari’s critics often acknowledged his honesty and personal integrity.

Reflecting on their shared political history, Tinubu said Buhari understood that political rivalry must give way to responsible governance once elections are concluded, stressing that cooperation across differences is a mark of wisdom rather than weakness.

“Nation-building demands that we compete passionately and govern responsibly. President Buhari understood that the contest ends when the oath begins,” he said.

The President called on political leaders to keep Nigeria’s politics honourable and governance focused on delivering results, urging citizens to place national interest above ethnic, religious, or partisan considerations.

He added that genuine nation-building requires the active participation of all Nigerians, not leaders alone.

President Tinubu also commended the author of the biography for documenting Buhari’s life with depth and balance, noting that the book enriches Nigeria’s collective memory and offers valuable lessons for younger generations.

He expressed hope that the work would find its way into classrooms and libraries to inspire future leaders.

In a personal tribute, Tinubu said Buhari’s influence would continue to endure, pledging to honour his legacy through governance anchored on discipline, compassion, and resolve.

He prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the late former President mercy and Jannatul Firdaus, and asked for comfort for his family, as well as unity, wisdom, and peace for Nigeria.
