April 26, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid celebrated their 120th anniversary in style by defeating Mallorca 3-1 in La Liga on Wednesday.
Despite conceding an early goal from a corner, Atletico fought back with two quickfire goals at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half. With this win, they are now in third place, only two points behind their city rivals Real Madrid in the league standings, who lost their previous match against a fantastic Girona.
To celebrate their 120th anniversary, Atletico encountered a difficult start as they fell behind in the 19th minute. Mallorca’s Matija Nastasic scored with a header from a corner. However, Atletico quickly bounced back with two goals in quick succession, one just before half-time and the other right after the break. Rodrigo de Paul scored with a close-range strike, and Alvaro Morata netted a towering header from a Nahuel Molina cross.
The final goal of the game came in the 76th minute, with Yannick Carrasco finishing off a counter-attack and securing the win. The victory over Mallorca marks a significant moment in their La Liga campaign, placing them closer to securing the second position in the league standings.
Their next match is against Real Valladolid on Sunday, while Mallorca is set to play Athletic Club on Monday.
