Atletico Madrid Beat PSV

December 10, (THEWILL) — Atletico Madrid strengthened their bid for a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League with a hard-fought 3-2 win at PSV on Tuesday.

Diego Simeone’s side moved up to seventh in the 36-team table, while the Dutch hosts slipped to 19th after the narrow defeat.

PSV made a blistering start when Guus Til tapped home after just 10 minutes, finishing off a move involving Ismael Saibari and Couhaib Driouech.

The hosts could have doubled their advantage soon after, but Driouech overplayed his hand following Sergino Dest’s pass, allowing Marc Pubill to clear the danger.

That profligacy proved costly when Yarek Gasiorowski surrendered possession carelessly, gifting Julian Alvarez a straightforward finish to restore parity.

Atletico seized control after the interval. David Hancko turned the match on its head in the 52nd minute when he pounced after goalkeeper Matej Kovar failed to deal with Matteo Ruggeri’s half-volley.

Four minutes later, Pablo Barrios delivered a precise cross for Alexander Sorloth to head home clinically, extending the visitors’ lead to 3-1.

PSV mounted a late charge when substitute Ricardo Pepi converted Ivan Perisic’s flick-on with five minutes remaining.

Pepi nearly provided the equaliser moments later, but his inviting delivery was headed wide by Armando Obispo, who had also come off the bench.

The Spanish side withstood the closing pressure to claim three vital points in their pursuit of automatic qualification for the knockout stages.

PSV’s hopes of progressing from the league phase now face a significant test with limited matches remaining.
