March 24, (THEWILL) – The Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), held in Jos, with a task to figure out a new Nigeria from the aggregate contribution of the national working class.
With the theme “Building a new Nigeria: The role of the working class in advancing decent work agenda and national transformation in the era of new normal”, the two-day conference, which ends Friday, has attracted delegates from all the thirty six states and the Federal Capital Territory.
In a welcome address at the occasion, the national President of AUPCTRE, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, noted that “the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused massive changes in our daily lives, changes that have often happened rapidly and abruptly.”
He said further that, “life adjustments often come with a wide range of experiences and emotions”, to the effect that “before we know it, we have reluctantly let go of our old normal, and now settling into what seems to be a new normal.”
In her own welcome address, chairperson of the Plateau State Council of AUPCTRE, Comrade Dorcas Yusuf Lenkat, said the Union “represents the tacit sentiments of the marginalised Nigerian populace by enlightening the citizens and constructively criticise unfair Government policies, which are meant to emasculate and impoverish the Nigerian citizenry.”
According to the General Secretary of AUPCTRE, issues to be discussed go beyond the theme of the conference to include the socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the scale of widespread corruption in Nigeria.
