May 25, (THEWILL) – Tragedy struck in the Abo-Umulolo community of Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State, on Thursday as suspected bandits killed two students writing the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams.
An eyewitness told Statesman that the students were on their way to school when they were ambushed and killed by the assailants in the early hours of the day.
The attack reportedly triggered a gun duel between security operatives and the armed men, throwing the area into panic as residents fled in different directions due to the heavy exchange of gunfire.
A resident of Abogbu, a neighbouring village, told our correspondent that the sound of sporadic gunshots sent people running for safety.
“People abandoned their vehicles and fled on foot. Traders locked their shops and ran away,” the eyewitness said.
As of press time, efforts to reach the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful as his phone line was unreachable.
