Barcelona Complete €25m Signing of Espanyol Goalkeeper Garcia

Joan Garcia

June 18, (THEWILL) – Barcelona have finalised the acquisition of goalkeeper Joan Garcia from city rivals Espanyol, with the Catalan giants triggering the 24-year-old’s €25 million release clause.

The Spain youth international has committed to a six-year contract at Camp Nou, bringing an end to his nine-year association with Espanyol after joining their Academy at age 15.

Garcia emerges from an outstanding 2024/2025 La Liga campaign where he recorded 146 saves, more than any other goalkeeper in the division.

The shot-stopper was one of only two players to feature in every minute of the season alongside Getafe’s David Soria, demonstrating remarkable consistency despite Espanyol’s mid-table finish in 14th position.

The transfer addresses Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s extended absence due to knee surgery.

Polish veteran Wojciech Szczesny was persuaded out of retirement to fill the void, making 30 appearances during Barcelona’s domestic treble-winning season under manager Hansi Flick.

Garcia’s arrival creates genuine competition for the number one jersey, with ter Stegen expected to return to full fitness ahead of the new campaign.

The Spanish keeper’s performances caught attention despite Espanyol’s struggles, including defeats at home and away against his new employers during the recently concluded season.

Espanyol confirmed the activation of Garcia’s release clause in an official statement, marking the departure of a player who represented the club’s most valuable asset.

Garcia posted a farewell message to supporters, acknowledging his emotional connection to the Cornella-based club before making the short journey across Barcelona to join the reigning Spanish champions.
