September 1, (THEWILL) – Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Portuguese forward, Joao Felix, on a season-long loan from La Liga rivals, Atletico Madrid.
The deal to bring Felix to the Nou Camp has been in the works for some time, with the player stating publicly in July that Barcelona was his preferred destination. After protracted negotiations between the two Spanish clubs, an agreement has now been reached.
A statement from Barcelona revealed that Atletico have sanctioned a loan until 30 June 2024, with no option for Barcelona to make the transfer permanent. The club thanked Felix for his “financial effort made and his desire to wear the Barca shirt.”
Felix has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth at Atletico since joining them in 2019 for £113 million from Benfica. The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Chelsea, scoring just four English Premier League goals.
There are questions as to whether Barcelona will be able to register Felix’s contract with La Liga due to their ongoing financial difficulties. As it stands, players like Marcos Alonso and Inaki Pena cannot play in the league as they remain unregistered.
