April 27, (THEWILL) – Barcelona Femeni have made it to their third consecutive Women’s UEFA Champions League final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Chelsea Women, despite drawing 1-1 in the second leg at Camp Nou.
Caroline Graham Hansen scored the opener, but Guro Reiten’s goal cancelled out the lead. Although Chelsea tried their best to score another goal, they could not break down Barcelona’s stanch and stubborn defence any further.
Chelsea already had an uphill battle to climb after losing the first leg 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Moreover, Barcelona had not lost a home game since February 2019, which made the task even more challenging. However, the visitors held their ground in the first half, going into halftime with a 0-0 scoreline. Although Barcelona dominated, they failed to get a shot on target.
Barcelona’s fans were excited to see two-time Ballon d’Or winner, Alexia Putellas, return to the squad after ten months and Asisat Oshoala featured for an hour before being substituted, but it was Caroline Graham Hansen, who took the spotlight in the first half. Although her initial goal was disallowed for offside, she also assisted Mariona Caldentey’s missed opportunity.
Reiten’s second-half goal marked a period of momentum for the Blues but time ran out before they could find the winning goal they needed to take the game into extra time. Barca’s next match will be against Huelva on Sunday, while Chelsea will take on Liverpool on Wednesday.
