March 18, (THEWILL) — Seven goals from Barcelona put Newcastle United to the sword at Camp Nou, with the Spanish giants winning 7-2 on the night and 8-3 on aggregate to advance to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Raphinha broke the deadlock in the sixth minute, slotting past Aaron Ramsdale from Lamine Yamal’s through ball. Anthony Elanga pulled one back for Newcastle nine minutes later, but Marc Bernal restored Barcelona’s lead from a free-kick before Elanga struck again from Harvey Barnes’ low cross. Yamal then converted from the penalty spot after Kieran Trippier fouled Raphinha, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead at the interval.
Barcelona extended their advantage shortly after the restart when Fermin Lopez found himself one-on-one with Ramsdale and finished into the bottom-left corner to make it 4-2.
Robert Lewandowski added two further goals to put the tie beyond any doubt. He first slid the ball home following impressive build-up play from Yamal, then headed in from Raphinha’s inswinging corner to make it 6-2.
Raphinha completed the rout by capitalising on a poor pass from Jacob Ramsey to register his second of the evening. Barcelona will now face either Atletico Madrid or Tottenham Hotspur in the last eight.
