April 01, (THEWILL) – Muslim leaders in Bayelsa State have commended Governor Douye Diri for his administration’s support during the Ramadan period, acknowledging his inclusiveness and commitment to religious harmony.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim community, the chairman of the state chapter of the Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Yakubu Otobo, lauded the governor for his consistent gestures of goodwill, including the regular sponsorship of Muslim pilgrimages throughout his first tenure.
Otobo, who led a delegation of Muslim leaders to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr at Diri’s hometown, Sampou, in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, described the administration’s welfare initiatives as exceptional, noting that Muslims in Bayelsa enjoy privileges not commonly extended in other states.
Otobo said, “On behalf of the Muslim community in Bayelsa, we appreciate your unwavering support.
“Your leadership has been fair and accommodating, ensuring that Christians and Muslims are treated equally without discrimination. For this, we pass a vote of confidence in your administration.”
In his response, Diri expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the contributions of the Muslim community to the state’s economic growth.
Diri stated, “As you celebrate Sallah, I want to identify with you.
“Let us continue to promote religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Where you reside is your home—Bayelsa is your home, and we must all work together to protect and develop it.”
The governor, who wore a white Babariga to honor the occasion, urged the Muslim community to remain law-abiding and continue their cooperation with security agencies.
“No society is completely free of crime, but Bayelsa remains one of the safest states in the country. Your cooperation has been instrumental in maintaining peace, and I urge you to sustain that spirit,” he added.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters, Rev. Godspower Asingba, commended Diri for his inclusive leadership, noting that the state government provides food items and financial assistance to Muslims at the beginning of Ramadan to support their fasting.
The Bayelsa State Legal Adviser on Islamic Affairs, Barr. Bilkisu Odoko, also expressed appreciation for the administration’s support, particularly its impact on widows and orphans.
She further urged the government to include Muslim women in its skills acquisition programs and consider them for political appointments, emphasising that increased representation would strengthen the state’s commitment to diversity and empowerment.
