April 11, (THEWILL) — Ruthless Bayern Munich took a giant step towards retaining the Bundesliga title on Saturday, thrashing relegation-threatened St. Pauli 5-0 at Millerntor-Stadion to move 12 points clear at the top of the table with five matches to play.
Jamal Musiala broke the deadlock inside nine minutes, meeting Konrad Laimer’s cross with a header, and Vincent Kompany’s side went on to add four further goals after the interval. Leon Goretzka struck on 53 minutes with a volley, then turned provider just 75 seconds later, setting up Michael Olise for Bayern’s third.
Nicolas Jackson added to his tally shortly after the hour mark, slotting past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj after Musiala slipped a pass through the St. Pauli defence. Jackson then played a pivotal role at the other end of the scoring, dispossessing the hosts inside the penalty area and teeing up Raphael Guerreiro for the fifth two minutes from time.
Goretzka had a late header disallowed for offside following a VAR check, but the result was comfortable enough. Bayern now need only four more points to confirm a successful title defence.
The victory also carried a statistical landmark: Bayern’s season tally reached 105 Bundesliga goals, surpassing the German top-flight record of 101 they had set themselves in the 1971/1972 campaign.
