October 15, (THEWILL) — The Benue State Government has approved the conversion of the Benue State Water Board into a Water Corporation to expand its operational scope, enhance service delivery, and attract public-private investment into the state’s water sector.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Mr. Ogwu Odu, disclosed this in Makurdi, noting that the move followed the passage of the Water Reform Bill by the Benue State House of Assembly and its subsequent assent by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Odu explained that the reform was part of government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that residents across the state have consistent access to potable water.
He said, “The Otobi Water Works in Otukpo Local Government Area has been fully reactivated, and expansion work is ongoing to extend reticulation to communities that were not initially covered.”
The commissioner further revealed that the state government is collaborating with the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPADEC) to expand and improve the Katsina-Ala Water Works for better service delivery in that axis.
He added that the Federal Government, with support from the state, has taken over the management of the Ameladu Water Works in Gboko Local Government Area to ensure efficiency and sustainability.
Odu urged residents to continue supporting Governor Alia’s administration beyond 2027, stressing that the government remains committed to addressing the infrastructural and developmental needs of Benue State
