BEVERLY HILLS, January 10, (THEWILL) – A lone female bomber Saturday afternoon rocked the Maiduguri main market in the Borno State capital, killing 20 persons and injuring 18 others.
Saturday’s attack made it the third time in recent times that the market will be bombed.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Borno State Command, Gideon Jubrin, who confirmed the incident, said the female suicide bomber, who carried out the attack at about 12.30pm, was also consumed in the explosion.
According to the police, “20 persons were killed in the attack, including the female suicide bomber with 18 others injured at the market.”
Local sources told THEWILL that the explosion took place at the chicken section in the Yen-Kaji area of the market.
The area was immediately cordoned off while aid workers, comprising men and officers of the Red Cross as well as those of National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), took over rescue operation in the area.
ARed Cross van was also seen conveying the injured and the dead to the hospital amid fear that the death toll may rise because of the impact of the bomb blast.
NEMA spokesman, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, also confirmed the incident to THEWILL, saying officials of his agency were involved in the rescue operation.
